    Christmas is Coming!

    KellyTheWebGal

Christmas time at Messiah Village is NEVER dull. After Thanksgiving, employees and residents work together to decorate and fill the Village with Christmas spirit. The Grounds team always does a great job with the outdoor lighting. Residents also enjoy adding their own special touch to their cottages and apartments. If you get a chance, I encourage you to drive by some evening and take a look.
    12-09 Winter (49)

In the spirit of going green, the past two years we sent electronic greeting cards instead of paper cards. This has become one of my favorite projects to work on with the Communications team. Each year we try to add a little Messiah Village twist to the greeting. Last year President Lesher read the Night Before Christmas Messiah Village style. This year we took a popular Christmas carol and gave it a Messiah Village twist. Any ideas? I’ll give you a hint. It involves an elf and Santa driving 2 people movers.

If you would like to be added to our Christmas greeting list you can send your email address to me at kherbster@messiahvillage.org.

    The Test

    WriterKarin

Yesterday I took my son to school for his kindergarten test.  As we drove, I told him that he’d meet his new teacher and that she might ask him a few questions to get to know him.  (I tried to be very cool and not show that I was a little nervous about this milestone!)  As he sauntered down the long hallway, holding his teacher’s hand, I sat  in an empty office filling out paperwork.  A few minutes later, he came bounding down the hall, smiling, and holding a newly sharpened pencil.  In the parking lot, I asked him about “the test.” He said it was great and then proceeded to say, “Did you know Miss Jones is only 27 years old and that she lives one mile away from the school?” I laughed and laughed….why was my child asking his teacher all these questions when HE was the one there for testing?  Later, as I related this to my husband, we laughed again. And then I realized that my son is entering a new relationship. Come September, he’ll spend 5 days a week with this teacher, learning, laughing, and growing with her and his classmates. I guess it’s only fair that he ask her a few questions!

As we think about living and working at Messiah Village, it’s important to remember that good relationships are based on knowledge and a mutual respect of the other person’s stories.  And speaking of stories, our residents have great stories!  If we really want to embrace community life, we need to ask questions and really hear the answers. Maybe this week, you’ll meet someone new. You don’t have to ask them their age, but you could ask them about a favorite vacation, a beloved hobby, or a childhood pet.  Sometimes the simplest question starts a great friendship.

    1 Week, 2 Blizzards

    Aly Felton

There’s nothing like three feet of snowfall to really bring people together. When an enormous amount of snow falls, our daily routines are disrupted. Although it can be inconvenient and often dangerous, I enjoy being snowed in. It really makes people work together and help each other out.

You can enjoy mugs of hot cocoa with friends and catch up on that reading you’ve been meaning to get to. You can take a walk in a winter wonderland or even ski down Messiah College’s Cemetery Hill (It’s not impossible, believe me!). Everyone works together; your neighbor shovels your car out and you pass along the favor by helping a friend push their car out of its stuck position. (Anyone remember the movie Pay it Forward?!?) So many good deeds are done when snow falls.

Our lives often become so hectic, so chaotic that we never allow ourselves to slow down. I think blizzards are one of God’s ways to make us really appreciate life and each other.  It’s fun to hear friend’s and coworker’s stories about their snow adventures. Please share your stories and reflections about this past week and the snow storms. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

    The Best Gift Ever

    NateTheTech

    original legos

What is the best gift you ever received for Christmas? I don’t know how many toys I got as a kid, but it certainly was a lot. Probably too many. Toy cars and trucks, and GI Joes, and LEGOs.

I remember playing with these toys for hours on end lost in a world of made up stories and scenarios. I am sure that my mom and dad appreciated the fact that these toys often kept me occupied (re: not getting into trouble) and quiet (re: not pestering my parents).

But if I really take the time to reflect back on what gifts were the best I ever received, the ones that made a difference were the ones that built the foundation of being in community that helped me to engage with others. Board games, card games, or a baseball glove are hard to play with on your own. You need someone to play with you.

Relationships with others can be built with friends and family while trying to avoid paying rent on Boardwalk or Park Place. Good debate can be had during Scrabble about the legitimacy of the word “impactful.”

I have great memories of playing Bible Trivia, and Sorry, and Rack-O with my parents.

So what was your favorite gift? What gift did someone give you that helped you build relationships with others?  What gift did you give someone else that helped build a relationship?
