    This Week @ MV

    MVpresident

Our prayers continue to go out to those locally and in Japan who have encountered tragedy in recent weeks. Thanks to many of you who contributed food or money to the Clouse family. The food was delivered to the family over the weekend. Some employees are interested in helping to reconstruct their home. We are looking into this and will keep you posted in case you are interested in helping.

Last week we also learned that Mrs. Mildred “Tiny” Osman, who died in the house fire a few doors away on Mount Allen Drive, had recently begun coming to our beauty salon. We do not have a lot of older adult community members who use the salon services, but is wonderful that salon team members are willing to reach out and serve the wider neighborhood. The salon reaching out is another example of Messiah Village enhancing the lives of older adults.

Older adults have been particularly impacted by the devastation in Japan. Nate Shields posted an article about this on the Village blog and Facebook page. Also, over the weekend the Wall Street Journal had another article about how it is impacting older adults. The article said in some of the cities/towns most impacted that 20% to 30% of the people are older adults. We continue to collect funds until Friday, March 25 if you would like to give. Please drop by or send funds to the Gift Development Office. Thanks for your generosity.

The SPACE project is finally up and out of the ground! When you drive on Messiah Circle you see the new entrance taking shape. The project is on schedule for a September completion. You can follow progress with photos on Facebook and the MessiahVillageBlog.org.

Please sign up to participate in the Wicket on the Green to be held on April 30. Last year was the first time I had played croquet in a couple of decades but still had a lot of fun. Invite your family and friends to come along and have fun, eat some great food and benefit the Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care. For more info go to WicketOnTheGreen.org.

Have a great week and thanks for living our mission of “responsibly enhancing the lives of older adults with Christ-like love.

On Saturday, April 24 Messiah Village hosted our very first charity croquet tournament – Wicket on the Green! Yes, I said croquet! Unique, right?  Unlike a golf tournament, croquet can be played on our beautiful Nittany Lawn so there’s no need to travel. As a familiar backyard sport, croquet is something that can be enjoyed by all ages.

We hosted 21 amateur teams and 4 USCA professional teams! People came from Tennessee, Virginia, and Maryland to play…and the winners went home with great cash prizes, thanks to our main event sponsor, Turkey Hill Dairies!

You could feel the excitement in the air as blue skies broke across the beautifully prepared green lawn.  Some players were all in white, looking very genteel. Others donned arygle sweaters or crazy rainbow socks to add some fun to the game.   From the youngest player to the oldest, everyone had a grand time playing croquet, enjoying gourmet sandwiches and french fries, and listening to a fantastic guitar ensemble.  Best of all, the event created awareness of the Endowment Fund for Benevolent Care.  Some of the professional players made donations to Messiah Village before they left because they appreciated our mission and wanted to help!

Mark YOUR calendar for next year’s tournament – Saturday, April 30, 2011. You won’t want to miss the fun and camaraderie of this wholesome competition.  This year’s players have all been energized and many have said they’re coming back next year – but not until they buy new croquet sets so they can practice!  Maybe you should dust off the old mallets in your garage or basement and get some wickets in the ground this summer.  You just might be a Wicket on the Green champion next year!

    Winning A Watermelon

The following story was written by Leigh Hoffman, a Messiah Village resident. Leigh reflects on learning the game of croquet…

Most people have never heard of Holly Cong, PA. (It is in Bucks County near Doylestown.) It was a long way from my hometown of York and my Uncle’s parent’s farm was out in the middle of nowhere. We family visited for a weekend over July 4, 1946,  the summer when I was 14 years old.

To entertain us, my aunt got out her strange-looking croquet set and assembled the course. The yard was big and level and the wickets and posts were spread out across it. What kind of a game was this?! I knew only horseshoes and quaits  for yard games and then tennis at our local park,  but nothing else.

Well, my Aunt explained the game and  then we started to play. My Dad was up first, then my oldest brother, my uncle, aunt, and then me. To my surprise, we played all day! The last game had a prize for it. “Wow!” I thought, ”I must play well to get it!” I ended up winning that final game and my prize was a watermelon kept at the bottom of the well. My brother brought it up and it was good and cold. What a sweet relief for such a hot day!

That was my first experience with croquet and it proved to me there were many more yard games for family fun and pleasure. After I became a family man, we had croquet for our kids to play. Even after they were grown and gone, my wife and I played to see who would do the dishes. As I see it, croquet is a great family and friends game no matter what age we are!

Did you play croquet growing up? What are your memories of the game?

If you are interested in playing croquet, Messiah Village is hosting a charity tournament April 24 called Wicket on the Green. Amateurs and pros are welcome to compete! Visit www.WicketontheGreen.org for more information. To see Leigh discuss his memories of croquet please watch the video clip that aired Monday night from ABC 27’s Chuck Rhodes’ Out & About here: Out & About for Wicket on the Green

A Wicket Good Time at Messiah Village

    KellyTheWebGal

Last week, Chuck Rhodes from ABC27 came to Messiah Village to film an Out & About segment about our upcoming croquet tournament. As a part of the segment, he attended our croquet practice day to get an idea of what our upcoming Wicket on the Green croquet tournament will look like. Steve Fluder, owner of Croquet Your Way and our consultant for this tournament, began the practice by explaining the rules so everyone would be on the same page.

When I was younger I played quite a bit of croquet with my sisters and grandfather. Once the games began and I grabbed my croquet mallet, tons of great memories came rushing back! We played so often my sisters and I could set up an entire croquet course by ourselves with little help from our grandfather.

It was so nice to be back out on the croquet court. The best part was laughing and spending time with great friends from MV. Once you start playing,  it’s very easy to catch on to the rules, and it’s just one of those games that brings a smile to your face! If you haven’t signed up to play in the upcoming Wicket on the Green croquet tournament on April 24, I enourage you to visit www.WicketOnTheGreen.org and sign up today. Be sure to tune in to ABC27 on Monday April 12 at 6:00 p.m. or Tuesday April 13 at 12:00 noon to catch a glimpse of last week’s practice day.

    Croquet Memories

    PRGuruKristen

When was the last time you played croquet?croquetballs

I think I was ten years old the last time I played. I remember it was a really hot day. My family had gone to my Great Aunt Odell’s house to visit on a Sunday afternoon. I remember my brother and I played that afternoon in her backyard, while my parents visited with my Great Aunt.

It is funny how we have “light bulb” memories of certain events in our life. Most of the fun things I did with my brother I no longer remember, but this sticks out in my mind. Was it because it was something different to do? Was it because we did it at a distant relative’s home that we rarely visited? I don’t know. I’m just glad I have the fond memory.

These memories have recently come to the surface with the announcement of Wicket on the Green, Messiah Village’s upcoming charity croquet tournament on Saturday, April 24.

When was the last time you played croquet? Is there someone you may wish to play with and create a “light bulb” memory that is hard to forget? I think I will invite my brother to come and play croquet on April 24.
